History

It all started under the cloud-ridden April sky of yet another belayed Swedish spring in 2008. A vision to spread happiness by turning an everyday essential into a colourful design piece. A rigid standard of ultimate quality, craftsmanship, and creativity. A philosophy brought to perfection by the Happy Socks collective of creators, most recently spotted in a 400-year-old shrieking red cottage among the cherry trees and berry bushes in a park located in the midst of Stockholm.

Quality

What is different about our new Collection?
A higher quality combed cotton. Better fabric is the simplest way to improve our quality. Our new supplier provides stronger, softer combed cotton that makes our socks hold together better, keeping them and you happy. A reinforced toe and heel will further prevent your Happy Socks from breaking. Besides material, we have moved to a new factory, still located in Turkey. This factory has a tougher AQL* test for our Happy Socks. Two rigorous tests, one during production and one before shipping, help ensure the highest quality possible. We have also implemented a process called Silicon Washing. This sock-talk really means our Happy Socks will feel better on your skin and won’t shrink when you wash them.
In addition, we have moved the production of our tights to Italy, a country famously renowned for its high standard in quality fashion. Design and innovation are nothing without the proper execution. Our goal in this business is to provide you with the best, happiest socks around. We are proud of our new collection and we know you will be too. We are confident about Chapter #FOUR. New factory, best materials, awesome designs, and meticulous attention-to-detail execution all for you, our loyal customer. Our Chapter #FOUR Collection contains our highest quality socks yet. We have better yarns, new production, and new sock knowledge to make our socks better than ever before! However, there is a lifetime for any sock. They do not last forever and quality will diminish over time and after multiple washes. But they are still really great!

* (AQL) is the worst tolerable process average in percentage or ratio, which is still considered acceptable: that is, it is at an acceptable quality level.

Happy Socks Manufacturing

Our socks are manufactured in Turkey at a family-driven factory that has been in the business for more than 30 years. Our tights are manufactured in Italy, where production is famously renowned for its high quality. Some specific items and collaborations are also produced across the world in various locations. The factories maintain respectful working environments in accordance with International Labour Laws and Standards, and we visit frequently to see our friends and check up on the production of our Happy Socks.

Collection

Today, Happy Socks are sold in close to 50 countries across every continent.
Our newest collection, Chapter #FOUR, introduces improved suppliers, new fabrics, and new products like ankle socks and Italian-produced tights.
The Chapter #FOUR Collection is built in a new way. Our socks will still be released as a yearly collection, but now consisting of one main collection and three seasonal drops. Giving you the right Happy Socks for the right Happy Season.

Our Socks

We believe you should be able to wear whatever socks you like, so most of our socks are unisex. Our selection of tights, ankle socks, and over the knee socks are for women.

Happy Socks Care and Washing Instructions

All socks can be machine-washed without risk of colour fading. Our Wool Socks and Angora Socks should be washed in 30 °C / 86 °F. For all other Happy Socks, we recommend a washing temperature of 40 °C / 104 °F.
Avoid bleaching or ironing socks. Even though our socks are durable, they will last longer if they are kept out of the tumble dryer.

When putting on your brand new pair of Happy Socks, please take time to cut the thread on the label instead of ripping it off, as this will damage the socks.

Opening Ceremony

Opening Ceremony is a multifaceted retail environment comprised of shops, showroom,
and private label collections. The colab was released on New York’s Fashion’s Night Out and consisted of a selection of four Americana inspired styles of Happy Socks designed by Opening Ceremony.

Minecraft

Minecraft is a sandbox construction game where the user is able to create anything imaginable by combining materials made up of blocks. The Minecraft x HappySocks socks comes in a blocky box including 3 pairs of socks with exclusive Minecraft designs: the pig, the creeper and a Minecraft landscape sock.

Barneys New York

For the 2009 holiday season, Happy Socks worked with Barney’s COOP on a set of exclusive colours. Barney’s is known for their innovative, stylish collaborations with breakout brands and Happy Socks fit right in. The limited collection socks were available only at Barney’s and the collaboration was a unique take on the traditional footwear staple.

Be@rbrick

Happy Socks x Bearbrick Happy Socks was approached by Japanese legend company Medicom Toy Corp to design its very own version of the famous BE@RBRICK. We could not help but create the matching pair of socks. BE@RBRICK is a collectible toy designed and produced by the Japanese company MediCom Toy Incorporated, and sold in limited numbers. They are highly collectible, and predominantly collected by adults. As a result of their limited production, and the participation of artists, BE@RBRICKs are generally considered designer toys. In this collaboration, Happy Socks have designed an exclusive, creative and a colourful sock. The BE@RBRICK toy is designed as wearing this exclusive Happy Socks BE@RBRICK sock.

Colette and KesselsKramer

Paris super-store Colette and KesselsKramer contacted Happy Socks to create an ultra limited series of socks for the store swap they organized between Colette in Paris and London’s KK Outlet. We took the best pairs of Chapter #TWO and mismatched them, creating new fun pairs: the right sock represents Colette and the left is for KK .

Giles Deacon for the Elton John Aids Foundation

Happy Socks by Giles Deacon for the Elton John AIDS Foundation - a limited edition box of seven pairs of crazy socks. Each sock features a different design. Happy Socks teamed up with Giles Deacon and the Elton John Aids Foundation to make a great collaborative project and help bring notice to World AIDS Day while raising money for the foundation.

Globe-Trotter

This is a pairing made in heaven: Globe-Trotter and Happy Socks are partners – not in the sock making business – but in the display world. Globe- Trotter has been named Happy Socks’ official display partner for the US market. Not a bad deal for Happy Socks.

The Standard

Happy Socks teamed up with über cool Hotels The Standard for a different collaboration in each one of their locations. Two pairs per hotel: Downtown LA, Miami Beach, Hollywood and New York. Pairs were available in the mini-bar of all rooms.

Wong Wong

Designer Stephen Wong, head of Wong Wong and former Art Director of Helmut Lang Studios, created an exclusive World Cup 2010 collection for Happy Socks. “With inspiration sought from the world of football, the collection pays homage to the rich football culture of eight chosen nations from across the globe.”

Wood Wood

The cycling world gets another sock to commemorate Italy, arguably the world’s most passionate cycling nation. So who better to this than a Danish clothing line and a Swedish sock company? Together, Happy Socks and Wood Wood released the 2/3 CORSA sock which features green, white, and red stripes at the top of the sock.

The Founders

Viktor Tell – Creative Director of Happy Socks
Viktor worked as a graphic designer and an illustrator for several years before finding his place in the fashion world. Inspired by colourful, playful patterns and designs, he is influenced by the daily “everything and nothing” when designing the Happy Socks collections. His motto: “All play, no work” accurately shows what the label is all about, turning a simple and overlooked product into a fun, creative, expressive success story.

Mikael Söderlindh – CEO of Happy Socks
Mikael worked for 10 years in the advertising industry before him and long-time friend Viktor Tell started their Happy Socks adventure. After a decade of working in service, Mikael wanted to develop a product on a global market and build his own brand from A to Z; all driven by a clear strategy and business know-how. Integrating the corporate structure with a personal touch, Mikael runs Happy Socks by allowing creativity to evolve and grow without interference.

For you sock aficionados out there, we have gathered some history and general information about our beloved foot-protectors.

Socks

The word ‘socks’ is derived form loose-fitting slippers, called soccus in Latin, worn by Roman comic actors.
The earliest sock models were made from animal skins wrapped around the foot and tied at the ankles. The Ancient Greeks wore socks of matted animal hair for warmth. The Romans also wrapped their feet with leather or woven fabrics. In the 5th century, the pious people of Europe wore socks called puttees as a symbol of purity. 500 years later, socks became a symbol of wealth among the nobility. The modern sock is either knitted or woven. They are designed to reduce resistance between the foot and footwear, protect footwear, provide comfort, be fashionable, and keep the feet warm. In cold environments, socks help retain or remove the moisture of the foot, minimizing the risk of frostbite.

The invention of the knitting machine in 1589 made high quality socks more common, as they could be produced six times faster than by hand. Nonetheless, knitting machines and hand knitters continued to work side-by-side until the 1800’s.


The next revolution in high quality sock production was brought on by the introduction of Nylon in 1938. Until then, socks were commonly made from silk, cotton, and wool. Nylon gave rise to the process of blending yarns in order to produce high quality socks.

Colourful Socks

Colourful socks have recently become popular among the fashion-conscious. With the ability to be mixed and matched in seemingly unlimited combinations, these socks with character open up new and exciting fashion possibilities. Major sports brands often design colourful socks that become a key detail of sport uniforms, helping to distinguish players on opposing teams. Coloured socks can also be given a particular significance or meaning.

Fashion Socks

In a traditional world of black, grey, and blue dress socks, fashion socks stand out from the crowd displaying a more creative look. Checked, striped, dotted, or any other design you can think of, these socks can be worn in accompaniment with dress shoes, sneakers, or even a tuxedo in formal wear. Fashion socks are also perfectly at home in casual wear, adding a piece of colourful flare to blue jeans and a T-shirt.
Fashion socks come in a variety of heights: ankle, mid-calf (most common), and over the calf. Traditional dress socks have a reputation of slipping down the leg, obliging the wearer to pull them up again and again. Some men resorted to garters or sock suspenders, but now this is an issue of the past. Fashion socks with elastics have solved this recurring sock-pull problem.

Wool Socks

Wool socks have been around for a long time and are still popular today. Wool is a fibrous protein that comes from a variety of animal coats, primarily sheep. Wool socks keep the feet warm and comfortable, two qualities that will always keep them in style.
