Happy Socks joins Rave Review at Milan Fashion Week

Our annual Happy Socks Lab project became teaming up with Swedish upcycling fashion designers Rave Review in developing a range of accessories show pieces in their new collection, dubbed “Hauntology”. As a whole, the collection embraces the idea of ‘preppy gone wrong’, uniformal and conventional silhouettes take unexpected turns though patchwork and deconstruction, resulting in a punky, chaotic half-done-in-a refined-way type of look.

What is Happy Socks Lab?

First things first, Happy Socks Lab is a yearly initiative, meant to explore new ideas and push the boundaries of design and craftsmanship. The motto for this project is "All Play, No Work", reflecting the team's desire to have fun and be creative without overthinking the process..

For this year’s lab, Happy Socks teamed up with Rave Review in order to bring to life their show at Milan Fashion Week. By repurposing disused Happy Socks’ stock and samples into new socks, tights, and warmers, it was possible to create new and exciting looks in a more sustainable way.

Who Are Rave Review?

Rave Review is a Stockholm-based fashion brand working at the intersection of sustainability and avant-garde design founded in 2017 by designers Josephine Bergqvist and Livia Schück. Created with a commitment to craftsmanship and repurposing materials, the brand is dedicated to their design practice of up-cycling and entirely using second hand and deadstock materials, creating a limited number of unique garments. Rave Review transforms the past into contemporary pieces that resonate with a unique point of view within contemporary fashion.

Working with Rave Review

Although Happy Socks and Rave Review mainly work within different fields, a shared vision of exploring bold prints with a playful approach to design and communication makes for a seamless collaboration. With that said, let’s see what these repurposed socks will become. We sat down with Rave Review and asked about the process of dying and re-creating new looks from our old samples.

Happy Socks: Can you tell us more about how you went about recreating new looks from old socks?

Rave Review: “The whole process behind creating the socks, tights, and warmers came very naturally to us. We’ve been working with similar pieces for styling in previous collections, so the whole collaboration, from the very start, felt very us.”

Is there anything special to consider when using socks as a material? They’re very small, after all.

“Overall, we applied the same kind of thinking when it comes to patchworking together socks, as we did for a lot of garments. We simply pick out the socks we like the most, and then try different cuts and lines until it feels “right”. A lot of the lines have a disrupted “swirl” shape. Something we’re also embracing is a raw feel by keeping seams turned to outside and in some places even holes.”

We also saw that you dyed some of the socks, can you talk to us about that?

“Yes, we also decided to dye some of the socks, to make it fit more into the darker dusty palette of the collection. We wanted the socks to feel harmonious together with the clothes. Dying is a big part of upcycling for us, it’s another way to transform textiles and clothes into something new.”

Interesting to hear. We also dye many of our socks, though rarely do we re-dye them!

The Actual Show

We saved the best for last! Introducing “Hauntology” by Rave Review, a nod to personal experiences, recalling days of teenage curiosity. Borrowing its title from Mark Fisher’s famous concept of hauntology, the collection explores the lingering specters of the past in the present through fragmented pieces, as if stitched together from memories, resonating with echoes from the past. There’s more to be said, but sometimes pictures do indeed say more than a thousand words, so we’d rather you had a look. Enjoy!
