about andy wahloo

It was the perfect fit. Arabic for “I have nothing”, the name was given to Moroccan artist Hassan Hajjaj in 2000 by his longtime friend, the legendary Algerian musician, Rachid Taha. The two were discussing a project Hassan was working on over lunch when Rachid quickly said that it looked more like “Andy Wahloo” than Andy Warhol, the artist to whom Hassan’s work is often compared to. A few laughs, smiles, and nods in agreement later, Andy Wahloo was born.

Originally used for a Parisian restaurant collaboration with Mourad Mazouz – one of the most prolific North African restaurateurs of our time – now, the name has grown into a clothing brand that goes above and beyond its label.

Andy Wahloo Apparel celebrates modern “Souk Wear”. It embraces the new hip-hop generation’s voice and streetwear style from the Marrakech Medina, and “Super-Lux”, a maximalist approach that features one-of-a-kind couture garments handmade by local Moroccan artisans. Joined by our shared passion for using color and creativity to make the everyday extraordinary, Happy Socks and Andy Wahloo Apparel presents a collection of socks “Straight outta da Medina”. The bright playful designs remix traditional North African symbols with pop-culture and streetwear for a selection of styles that lets you follow in the growing brand’s footsteps The vision of the collection was captured by Hassan Hajjaj at his riad and through the alleys of Marrakech through a photo-shoot, and two original short films that feature a traditional Gnawa performance and modern homegrown beats from the souk.

The collection

The Halal & Haram pattern takes the good with the bad. The green, red, and yellow design is made to resemble a stop sign. The odd pair features one sock with the word Halal in Arabic, and Haram on the other, as a reminder that nobody is good or bad, we’re all a bit of both.

The Mosaic sock weaves together traditional symbols from the North African region to acknowledge the craftsmanship of the Morocco “Zellige” tile mosaics with a modern bright colorful pallet.

The Andy Stripe adds its Arabic logo to the landscape of mostly western letterforms, referencing the all-over prints of high-end fashion houses.

Led by the mighty roar of the rare Barbary from the Atlas Mountains, and Andy Wahloo in its original Arab font, the Atlas Lion sock honors the region’s regal past and while also looking to its bright future ahead.
